Strengthening Practical Work in Biology

BOOK THIS COURSE

We will explore strategies for teaching topics across the biology curriculum and develop an understanding of how practical work can be made more relevant and effective.

Module 1: Photosynthesis

Module 1: Photosynthesis

5th November 2020, 12:30 - 16:00
It is to help participants provide practical sessions with a focus on plants that will engage and enthuse pupils. OFSTED’s Maintaining Curiosity criteria states that teachers have a duty to foster and maintain a pupils natural curiosity. Practical activities in this course can help teachers to identify ways to do this.

Module 2: Enzymes

Module 2: Enzymes

5th November 2020, 12:30 - 16:00
This professional development experience outlines a GCSE biology required practical activity using enzymes based on AQA spec (but appropriate to other ABs) and has a focus on 'application' This is to help participants to manage practical activities invloving the use of a range of simple laboratory apparatus, including the use of water baths and continuous sampling. The session considers how a teacher can build on practical experiences gained through conducting the required practical activities so that students are prepared for examination questions, particularly those focused on assessment objective 2

Module 3: Microscopes

Module 3: Microscopes

10th December 2020, 12:30 - 16:00
This professional development experience outlines a GCSE biology required practical activity using microscopes to observe, record and measure cells. This is to help participants to manage practical activities involving the use of a microscope to take measurements and to record observations using scientific drawing conventions. Students will need to be taught how to prepare and observe temporary preparations, how to draw scientifically, and how to perform simple mathematical operations. The organisation of this activity with large class sizes and restricted access to resources can impose additional management burdens on teachers.

Module 4: Osmosis

Module 4: Osmosis

10th December 2020, 12:30 - 16:00
This professional development experience outlines a GCSE biology required practical activity using microscopes to observe, record and measure cells.

This is to help participants to manage practical activities involving the use of a microscope to take measurements and to record observations using scientific drawing conventions. Students will need to be taught how to prepare and observe temporary preparations, how to draw scientifically, and how to perform simple mathematical operations. Strengthening Practical Work in Physics

BOOK THIS COURSE

Explore a range of ideas for teaching topics across the physics curriculum and develop an understanding of how practical work can be made more relevant and effective.

Module 1: Forces and Motion

Module 1: Forces and Motion

21st January 2021, 12:30 - 16:00
more effective. There will be hands-on opportunities to explore interesting and creative approaches to new and familiar practical investigations. At the end we reflect on how to ensure that practical activities are purposeful.

Module 2: Energy and Matter

Module 2: Energy and Matter

21st January 2021, 12:30 - 16:00
his professional development episode aims to help participants explore a range of ideas to make the teaching of topics related to energy and meter more effective. There will be hands-on opportunities to explore interesting and creative approaches to new and familiar practical investigations. At the end we reflect on how longer-style investigations can be used in science lessons.

Module 3: Electricity

Module 3: Electricity

4th March 2021, 12:30 - 16:00
This professional development episode aims to help participants explore a range of ideas to make the teaching of topics related to electricity more effective. There will be hands-on opportunities to explore interesting and creative approaches to new and familiar practical investigations. At the end we reflect on how frequent and varied practicals can be used to develop an interesting and self-reinforcing scheme of learning.

Module 4: Light

Module 4: Light

4th March 2021, 12:30 - 16:00
This professional development episode aims to help participants explore a range of ideas to make the teaching of topics related to light more effective. There will be hands-on opportunities to explore interesting and creative approaches to new and familiar practical investigations.

At the end of this session we will look at a possible template that can be used when observing and/or reflecting on a practical lesson. We will also look at a few excellent places that participants can go to for additional help.
