Outstanding Teaching and Learning in Alevel/KS5 Physics

GET IN TOUCH FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THIS COURSE

Are you looking to improve your A level teaching? Do you want your learners to make outstanding progress? This course is suitable for anyone who is currently teaching A-Level Chemistry and wants to improve the quality of teaching and learning to the highest level. You will develop a range of strategies to move your teaching to the next level and develop the appropriate skills to support your learners.

This course continues from Teaching A level /KS5 physics for the first time but can be taken as a standalone.

These modules will help you to:

  • Explore a range of approaches to support deeper learning and teaching of more advanced content
  • Use examiner reports to inform your teaching and focus the development of learner skills
  • Establish a culture for outstanding teaching and learning in the classroom and laboratory

Module 1: What Does Outstanding Look Like?

Module 1: What Does Outstanding Look Like?

20th November 2020, 12:30 - 16:00
This first PDE is to get you reflecting on what outstanding teaching is, and howthis is adapted to A-Level teaching. You will determine the key facets to pushing your own development further, identifying through reflection where your strengths and areas for improvement lie. We then move on to consider how you as a leading practitioner in your school can develop an outstanding culture of teaching and learning of A-Level Physics and can offer support effectively to all key stake holders in your school setting. This includes fellow staff, early career teachers, trainees, technicians and the students.

Module 2: Teaching Advanced Physics

Module 2: Teaching Advanced Physics

20th November 2020, 12:30 - 16:00
In this experience, you will explore approaches to develop deeper learning and crucially, understanding of advanced content, for your students. You will audit the A-Level topics you teach and identify areas your students struggle with concepts. There will be an exploration of how practical endorsements can be utilised to maximise outcomes for students. On completion of this session, you will appreciate that having expert subject knowledge is imperative to enable you to teach consistently outstanding lessons that challenge the most able students. We will investigate online resources that can complement your teaching and learning.

Module 3: The Importance of Context

Module 3: The Importance of Context

29th January 2021, 12:30 - 16:00
In this experience you will consider the effectiveness of engagement on producing outstanding lessons. Discussing engaging methods to approach identified topics in advanced content. It is important when facilitating deeper learning that content taughtis contextualised. We will look at the advancements in recent research on the impact of science capital and providing students with relevant experiences in physics outside of the school environment. You will identify potential universities and organisationsthat you can construct valuable links with to support your teaching and the department. Finally, we will look at mathematical mastery for both yourself and your students, and why this is important for best possible outcomes.

Module 4: Using Data

Module 4: Using Data

29th January 2021, 12:30 - 16:00
This PDE focuses on how you can utilise the data available to you each year and throughout each academic year to enhance your teaching practices. Using exam results analysis available by all the exam boards can provide you with excellent guidance on where your teaching and schemes of work could be changed. Exam reports will provide you and your students with guidance on exam technique. We will look at the importance of end of topic assessments and mock exams, and how best to use the data that provides for revision and intervention. You will also consider techniques that can be used by your students to improve their own independence in preparing for examinations.
