Teaching A-level/KS5 Physics for the First Time

GET IN TOUCH FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THIS COURSE

Are you teaching KS5 physics for the first time? Perhaps you have been teaching it for a few years and are now looking for some new ideas to tackle the most common misconceptions and to get the most out of practical work? This course will improve your confidence in the subject and help you maximise the outcomes for your students. You will also develop activities to help you maximise student’s practical and mathematical skills.

These modules will help you to:

  • Develop engaging and highly effective approaches to the teaching of core content including practical demonstrations and investigations
  • Develop a wide skills set amongst your learners, including mathematical skills, application skills and independent learning
  • Use a range of teaching and learning strategies to support all abilities and prepare learners thoroughly for examination

Module 1: Key Concepts and Misconceptions

Module 1: Key Concepts and Misconceptions

17th November 2020, 12:30 - 16:00
Setting the scene for the day, looking at the big picture of physics and touching on different specifications, also giving the facilitator a chance to get to know the participants and their experience to date. Participants reflect on their current understanding and explore this as well as getting to know common misconceptions about basic topics (force and energy)

Module 2: Modelling Difficult Concepts

Module 2: Modelling Difficult Concepts

17th November 2020, 12:30 - 16:00
Research shows that modelling is widespread in science teaching. The focus of studies tends to be on how to optimise the use of models rather than on the value of models themselves. Evidence suggests that: the ideas that models are based on should be familiar to pupils, as otherwise this can confuse them further; and it is importantthat pupils understand how models differs from the idea being taught and learn the underlying idea rather than the model.

Module 3: Making Physics Engaging

Module 3: Making Physics Engaging

12th January 2021, 12:30 - 16:00
This session gives participants an overview of the specific challenges of teaching different groups of learners, namely girls in physics, more able and less able. It focuses on girls in physics as the lack of girls studying physics is a major issue nationally and may not be one that participants have considered solutions for – there is a lot of research in this area and many strategies which are successful for girls are also helpful for the whole cohort.

Module 4: Cultivating the Perfect Physics Student

Module 4: Cultivating the Perfect Physics Student

12th January 2021, 12:30 - 16:00
The final session of the day draws together some of the ideas during the other sessions, focusing on what successful students look like and then on strategies to promote this amongst all students – there is a lot of discussion and participants can draw on their own experience and set these ideas into their own context.
